Asafoetida (Ferula assa-foetida)
Asafoetida is an Ayurvedic herb that increases Agni (digestive fire), balances Vata and Kapha and increases Pitta. It is antibacterial, antiviral, expectorant, analgesic, especially carminative, improves digestion, improves menstrual symptoms, is anti-inflammatory, improves the immune system, increases fertility and improves mood swings and nervous disorders. It’s good to use a pinch of the herb when boiling beans to decrease flatulence, since beans are notorious in that sense. The herb is good for all manner of digestive disorders, respiratory ailments and nervous disorders, i.e. anxiety and stress.
